Mission & Values

Although founded as a religious organization, one does not need to follow any strict religion to share the mission of building homes based on the principles of community and hope. The organization’s main emphasis is on being a strong advocate for affordable and adequate housing while encouraging hope and self-sustainability. To meet this goal, recipients of housing funded by Habitat For Humanity pay a mortgage they are able to pay and work with Habitat volunteers to build their future homes.

History

Founded in Americus, Georgia, by Clarence Jordan and Millard and Linda Fuller
- In 1957, Jordan got a letter of support from Martin Luther King Jr.
Main goal was to make affordable homes with no profit building
Made “Fund for humanity” to fund the no-interest loans for there homeowners
In 1973, this system was also set up in the Democratic Republic of Congo by the Fullers
In 1976, Habitat for Humanity International was funded
Now set up in all 50 states and 70 countries
- Helped more than 35 million people
- More than 13.2 million volunteers
