Advocacy

UNITED STATES

In addition to construction of homes for those who need affordable housing, Habitat for Humanity is advocating for policy that ensures families better housing options. Now during the current climate, too many families are suffering because of the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects, especially the economic crisis. While in some areas with smarter rules there is safe housing, other locations have broken policies that do not provide for suitable shelter. Therefore by supporting Habitat for Humanity, you are creating preferable change in the U.S systems that influence housing. The organization can impact policies for housing solutions in order to assist families to find appropriate housing. In 2019, Habitat started the Cost of Home campaign to create stable homes for ten million individuals by mobilizing its members and new policies.

INTERNATIONAL

Habitat for Humanity recognizes that billions of people worldwide lack access to secure housing, and the Global Policy and Advocacy Agenda strives to address these needs through a plan to achieve housing security and stability.

Global Policy and Advocacy Agenda

  1. Ensure access to adequate housing options for all. Adequate housing is an integral part of changing an individual’s life, as a home provides the chance for stability, safety, and opportunity in their lives.

  2. Expand affordability through housing finance options. Around the world, the majority of adults lack access to housing finance options, and most low-income families face difficulty in getting funding from formal financial institutions. Habitat for Humanity seeks to promote solutions that allow greater access to affordable, safe, and adequate housing.

  3. Promote secure tenure rights and equitable access to land for shelter. Secure tenure, the right to protection from forced evictions, is an important aspect of providing families the safety they need to live freely and comfortably in their homes.

  4. Enable stakeholder engagement and community participation. At all levels of government, the needs and experiences of various groups of people help to create housing and land policies that best serve the needs of its community.

  5. Foster resilient and responsive communities through housing. Resilience is the ability to prepare, plan for, and recover from the event of disasters. It is important that communities are given the resources needed to adequately prepare for disasters and reduce risk of any possible damage from it, as well as support to effectively recover from these events.
